Abortion Definition of Abortion Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy before the fetus can survive outside the womb, typically before 20–24 weeks of gestation. It can be spontaneous (miscarriage) or induced (medical or surgical abortion). Types of Abortion 1. Spontaneous Abortion (Miscarriage) Occurs naturally without medical intervention. Threatened Abortion: Vaginal bleeding occurs but the cervix remains closed. Pregnancy may continue. Inevitable Abortion: Vaginal bleeding occurs with an open cervix, and pregnancy loss is unavoidable. Incomplete Abortion: Parts of the pregnancy remain inside the uterus.
